...Childbirth (also called labour, birth, partus or parturition) is the culmination of a human pregnancy or gestation period with birth of one or more newborn infants from a woman's uterus. The process of normal human childbirth is categorized in three stages of labour: the shortening and dilation of the cervix, descent and birth of the infant, and birth of the placenta. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. Copyright 2006 Columbia University Press. In some cases, childbirth is achieved through caesarean section, the removal of the neonate through a surgical incision in the abdomen, rather than through vaginal birth. Read full entry

childbirth?
I am in my sixth month of
pregnancy. I know where babies
come from and everything like
that. As my due date is only
three months away I cant help
but be nervous about
childbirth. I keep thinking in
amazment how does a 7 pound
baby come from the womans
vagina. Has anybody ever
thought that same way also?

I too have this thought a lot.. it worries me and other times fascinates me. Relax and try to see that women have done it since FOREVER.. I mean before stitches, pain meds, and most of those women had tons of kids.. (And, honestly, I doubt their men were having sex with them outta obligation.. so even back then it went back to normal ;-)) |

Is Natural Childbirth really I am 28 weeks pregnant with my
first baby (boy) and planning
to have a natural childbirth
in my local hospital. How bad
does child birth really hurt?
Is labor worse than child
birth? Is it worse than
breaking a bone in your body?
Just some questions i'd like
answered so i know what im
getting myself into. Thanks.

I have had two children, both by natural childbirth. It is painful, but not unbearable. I have never broken a bone, so I can't really compare that. I thought that the pushing was more painful than the contractions, but the pushing didn't last very long for me. I personally didn't think it was as bad as some people make it sound. Just try to relax about it. I think that having a positive attitude is the best thing you can do. If you expect the worst, then that's what you'll get. Good luck. |

I had natural childbirth 20 years ago. Trust me...I WANTED drugs but the baby was coming so fast they didn't even have time to set the stirrups up! Totally natural childbirth will hurts like HELL. The pressure from the head bearing down was excruciating but it only lasted a few seconds. I only have one child because I was unable to have more, but if I had to do it again I would do natural childbirth. I was totally coherent and able to remember everything for the first few minutes of her new life. I saw my mother and father hold their first grandchild. I saw the tears in my husband's eyes when he told me it was a girl. How long labor lasts is different for every woman. Mine was very short but very hard and very painful. I did not proceed according to all the things we learned in baby classes.....lol. Other discomforts vary as well. Toward the end I carried my daughter on one side...my tummy looked really funny and uneven. I didn't have much morning sickness...never threw up, just felt queasy for about 2 months. I also enjoy sleeping on my tummy...couldn't do that once I started to show. Don't let the thought of pain or scary stories keep you from having children if you want them. There are safe ways to make natural childbirth more comfortable but don't let anyone tell you it will be painless. My daughter is the light of my life and I cannot imagine being without her. |
