...In his writings about charismatic authority, Weber applies the term charisma to "a certain quality of an individual personality, by virtue of which he is set apart from ordinary men and treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities. These are such as are not accessible to the ordinary person, but are regarded as of divine origin or as exemplary, and on the basis of them the individual concerned is treated as a leader [1] How the quality in question would be ultimately judged from an ethical, aesthetic, or other such point of view is naturally indifferent for the purpose of definition."Weber, Maximillan. Theory of Social and Economic Organization. Chapter: "The Nature of Charismatic Authority and its Routinization" translated by A. R. Anderson and Talcott Parsons, 1947. Charismatic domination/authority- When I think of charismatic leadership types Hitler comes to mind. Images of Hitler’s verbiage as the masses salute him as well as his ideologies with the simple raise of a hand. I think too often people assume that charisma is definitively a positive thing, being led by an enlightened individual, when in all actuality it can be far from it. In less-severe examples we can look at all the crooked evangelists that have plagued the country for decades. Religion in the hands of these men…seemingly innocent, yet dangerous beyond human belief as their charismatic authority is legitimized by the masses. |

People are easily swayed, that is the truth. People will automatically assume a charismatic person is truthful and diligent which helps them believe whatever they have to say. People follow a charismatic person because they know that since they fell under his sway, others are likely to as well. Another way of looking at it means they think he has leadership qualities and he is capable of accomplishing his intended goals. The truly scary side of charismatic people is the one Hitler revealed, that they can use peer pressure to get an entire nation to do things they would never normally do. |
