The main reasons for the wide support he received were the harsh consequences of the Treaty of Versailles (and the results of WWI in general) for Germany as well as the Great Depression later. Check out these links, they have helpful and explanatory info http://www.schoolhistory.co.uk /lessons/riseofhitler/whysuppo rt.htm http://www.schoolhistory.co.uk /year9links/versailles.shtml and http://www.historylearningsite .co.uk/adolf_hitler.htm At that time other totalitarian systems spread throughout Europe as well. |

- Germany was demoralised after the punishing Treaty of Versailles, which basically made the country powerless and imposed extremely harsh penalties. This made them bitter and eager to regain strength. - During his time in the NSDP before he became Chancellor, Hitler helped to introduce a series of policies which systematically took power away from any political opposition. - The stockmarket crash of 1929 plunged the country into depression, making people feel desperate for change. At the same time, the German currency became hyperinflated, making it almost worthless. -There was widespread unrest. History has proven that during times of crisis, people tend to move towards political extremes. |

Hitler was not elected, he was appointed. He had run against Hindenburg for the Presidency of Germany and was defeated. The Nazi party was the second strongest party in Germany and was very obstructionist against the government in that they had enough members to force new elections every time they walked out of Parliament (the Reichstag). In addition, the Nazi party was extremely violent and was causing a crisis of crime and beatings all across the country. In order to bring about domestic peace, Hindenburg and his advisors offered the post of Chancellor (prime minister) to Hitler with the proviso that the cabinet would be dominated by non-Nazis (but second-tier offices in law enforcement would be held by Nazis). Hindenburg was led to believe that responsibility in government would 'mature' Hitler and the Nazis. This of course did not work because Hitler was not looking to make democracy work, he was looking to destroy democracy (which he promised the people he would do!). |
