Try a gradual introduction of the new cat to all of your pre-existing cats. Allow some time for the new cat to adjust to his new surroundings before doing so. To be safe, only allow to cats to interact while supervised until you can be sure that they will behave while by themselves. Keep in mind that it might take your cat several weeks or months to get used to having another cat around. Be prepared to jump into a catfight, too. You will also have to be prepared to do something should they be unable to get along. And remember, your older cat was there first. |

How do Cats and Dogs know I have 2 cats and three dogs.
One night, I ran out of cat
food (the dry type) and my
cats were hungry. So since I
had dog food only and the
shops were closed, I gave them
dog kibbles. They're more or
less of the same shape and
size and are made of the same
ingredients - chicken. My cats
took a nibble and refused the
rest of the bowl, preferring
to go hungry than eat dog
food. The next day, i got them
a fresh pack of made-for-cats
kibbles and they immediately
dived in and ate up. How come
my cats knew what I gave them
wasn't cat food?
I also know of dogs that won't
eat cat food for the long run
(not mine though, cos they're
pigs and will eat anything).
It would be good if a pet food
manufacturer can answer this
question. Is there some
special ingredient you put in
cat and dog food that makes
cats and dogs know which
kibbles is who's? Also,
nowadays, dogs are eating fish
too - like salmon. You can't
say it's the ingredient. How
come they know the difference?

They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually won't eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cat's food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog can't reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat won't go near the dogs food bowl on the floor. |

How do I get my cat to eat wet I have heard that dry cat food
is bad for your cats health.
My cat loves dry cat food and
only eats a small amount of
the wet cat food. I used to
give her dry food in the
mornings but now I have
started to give her wet cat
food as that would be the time
when she is the most hungry.
This morning she woke me up
meowing becuase she was hungry
and I fed her one of those
small tins of cat food and she
only ate half. An hour later
she still didn't finish it. I
gave her a small pile of dry
cat food and she ran straight
over and ate it. I don't think
it is enough food for her to
be eating only one small tin
of cat food a day (half in the
morning, half at night). She
is already small and although
her weight is okay, she really
doesn't need to be any
thinner.

Good for you! You're doing the right thing. I went through this myself, and it took me two weeks. First, be prepared to waste a bit of money. And to be patient. Buy several different brands of food, and get different varieties of each. Offer a bit of that, and if your cat responds to any, make note of the brand and flavor. It may be that he'll like venison or turkey, or perhaps he'll like any flavor from a certain manufacturer. You are right to switch gradually. I think you could continue what you're doing - offer the dry food once per day - give him 1/2 to 3/4 of what he would usually get. You could even break that into two meals although I don't think that really matters. By reducing the amount of food, your cat still is getting food but will also still be hungry. And hunger can be a great inducer to try new things! You could also try mixing some dry in with the canned. Basically, you're doing the right thing. Just be patient and try other foods too. EDIT: Whoever told you this was on the mark! Don't worry about the uninformed opinions out here. And dry food doesn't clean their teeth; you don't have to worry about that myth either. |
