...The Byzantine Empire or Eastern Roman Empire, was the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, centered on the capital of Constantinople, and ruled by Emperors. It was called the Roman Empire by its inhabitants and its neighbours, and was also known as Romania (Greek: , Rhōmanía). They quickly came to oppose them, as By the end of the reign of Heraclius I (610-641) , Muslim armies were making raids into Byzantine territory in Syria and were beginning to conquer the Persian territories. From this period onwards, Byzantine energies focussed almost entirely to the east and to the south. by the 700's the Byzentines began to turn the tied and start regaining it territories. so the hostilities to Islam began almost instantly with the Start of the religion, Mohammed 570-632, islam began @ 610. In 1071, however, the Seljuk Turks conquered the Byzantine army at Manzikert in Asia Minor—after this victory, the Seljuks quickly overran all of Byzantine territory in the east. This led to the Byzantines looking to europe for help and thus the start of the Crusades. |
