they will buy it, but will rip you off and give you a lot less than what it is really worth. you are better off putting it up on craigslist or ebay... don't let the music stores take advantage of you!! |

Buying a used guitar amp?
I am debating on buying my
first electric guitar amp, a
roland cube 30 watt. The owner
has had it for approximately
2-3 years, and exclaims it is
in excellent condition.
Question 1:
How long do solid state amps,
like the roland cube 30, last
if well treated?
Question 2:
He is selling a $250 amp for
$120. Does that give reason
for concern that it is older
than he proclaims?

The things that wear out on solid state amps, if well treated, are the mechanical, like your 1/4" phono sockets, knobs, etc. As well, in any amp, the larger power capacitors are also some of the first things to go. Both of these are reasonably to check out in person.. do the controls feel smooth (good) or gritty (bad), does the 1/4" go in and feel snug, do you hear any crackle or hum if you poke at it while it's on? For bad caps, you'll probably hear undue hum from the active amp with guitar connected. The real effective age depends on how much it's been used. If he gigged with this at a club every weekend for 2-3 years, it's effectively older than if it was just his practice amp played a couple of times a week at low volume (the 30X has a low power mode, not sure about the original 30). Check out ebay for the going rate of used Cube 30s, particularly the "sold" lists (you have to be registered to see those).. that should establish what the fair going price is. The 30X goes for around $230-$240 on the street, so I would bet that $120 is about right for a used Cube 30. |
