...The origin of the term 'burlesque' is contentious with most citing the French burlesque, which was, in turn, borrowed from the Italian burlesco, derived from the Spanish burla ('joke') as its root.[1][2][3][4][5] Its literal meaning is to 'send up'. In Britain 'burlesque' in verse and prose was first popularised in the 14th century by Geoffrey Chaucer's satirical The Canterbury Tales. Later many Irish and British satirical writers came to prominence with political and social burlesques in the 18th and 19th centuries such as William Makepeace Thackeray. Burlesque??
How old do you have to be to
take classes, usually?
This is in the category of
dancing, by the way.

It would be fairly inappropriate for a young person to be dancing burlesque. I'd say at the VERY youngest 18+. That style of performance simply isn't for kids. |

What films, live shows, books, I truly enjoy and appreciate
burlesque entertainment. So
much so, that I want to become
a burlesque dancer, and I'd
(eventually) like to start my
own troop of burlesque
entertainers. I'd like to know
where I should begin to do the
research on the burlesque
movement. I feel it's
important for me to know the
roots of burlesque, become
familiar with the stars of
burlesque, and to know how to
move like burlesque dancers
move. Your answers are greatly
appreciated!

Hrm...I relaly dont think there are requirements...your learn most of your stuff while on the job. you just need a body that people would want to watch perform dances like those. Look, to many this is morally wrong, but if its your dream and not for the money, I say go and do it! Many people don't understand that burlesque used to be considered an art back in the day. |
