What is the Distance between My Great Grandfather came to
America in 1884 from Hanover,
Germany. He sailed from The
Port of Bremen, Germany and
arrived In New York City. What
I want to know is How far it
is and the time it would have
taken him in 1884. To reach
America. Thanks

I cant easily find Bremen on any of the Great Circle Calculators on line, so I used Hamburg, which is 6124 km or 3805 miles or 3306 nautical miles from NYC. How long? He would probably have come on NordDuetsch Lloyd or Hamburg-Amerika lines; in 1884 their ships were pretty primitive...paddle wheels weren't uncommon; auxiliary sail rigs weren't unknown; ships probably did 10-15 knots so say ten days to two weeks; if he was in immigrant class conditions then were pretty primitive. |

Bremen is less expensive than the three bigger cities you listed. The city is its own capital, its infrastructure is fine. The weather is Northern German standard, it´s quite nice in the summer, rather rainy in autumn and winter. Bremen is traditionally on of Germany´s "red" capitals, that is the Social Democrats have been around for years - and probably will stay. The local economy is doing fine compared to other cities, though as in lots of similar-sized German cities, the atmosphere depends on which quarter you live in. Renting apartments is easy and not too expensive, getting around is easy, Bremen has quite an interesting history and many worthwhile sights. On "what to do", it depends on the time you´re going. The Bremer "Freimarkt" (free market) is big, but the city offers a lot - dates and advice can be found on the city´s website bremen.de. :) |
