...An axle is a central shaft for a rotating wheel or gear. In some cases the axle may be fixed in position with a bearing or bushing sitting inside the hole in the wheel or gear to allow the wheel or gear to rotate around the axle. In other cases the wheel or gear may be fixed to the axle, with bearings or bushings provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported. Sometimes, especially on bicycles, the latter type is referred to as a spindle. Read full entry

Differential gearing allows the two output shafts to turn at different speeds, but the same torque. The average speed of the two wheels has to equal the speed of the differential housing. Every driving axle that you're going to see is going to contain a differential. You won't run into a driving axle on anything around your house that doesn't contain the differential. So your question about a "regular axle" is a little mysterious. P.S. Differential gearing is one of those subjects you're not supposed to get into on the internet, because people cannot understand it. It's very hard to picture it in your mind, if you're never taken one apart. Misconceptions abound. Okay, if you are looking for a replacement for your rear axle on a rear-drive car with a solid axle (not independent rear suspension), then the term "differential" simply becomes interchangeable with the term "rear axle". When you're talking car parts at the junk yard, most people use those terms interchangeably. If you have independent rear suspension, the differential is just one piece of a whole system of pieces. It's the big piece in the middle. If the axle is taken apart into pieces, then the differential might just be some of the internals in the middle. You'll need to look at the picture to figure that out. P.S. I noticed something funny. You remember above when I said people couldn't discuss this on the internet? Look at Goyo's answer. He posted this totally wrong statement: "it's called a differential, because it works on the principle of the difference in force. On a car (or truck), unless it's 4-wheel drive or posi-trac, only one wheel pulls at the time" This is completely, totally wrong, and very typical of stuff people post on the internet. |

How do you remove the axle Some axle grease rags were
accidently washed with normal
laundry, causing all the
cloths to smell like axle
grease. I've tried re-washing,
but the smell in the laundry
and washer remains.

How do you get a jammed axle I have a 2000 eclipse . I
installed a new front
driverside axle and it turned
out to be the wrong one. Now I
think its jammed on the safety
ring at the end of the axle
thats goes into the
transmission. Now I can get it
out. What do I do?

the best way i found to remove a jammed axle was to put a long pry bar between the end of the axle and the trans. body and pry towards the opposite side of the car. tap the end of the axle while you are prying it out with a hammer or hard rubber mallet. just becareful not to hit it really hard you don't want to damage anything inside the trans. it should pop out. if ti's on a lift becareful it doesn't fall on your feet, it's best if you have someone holding the other end or at least support it with a coat hanger. good luck. |
