Augustine is considered the first theologian in Christian history. He is actually called the Doctor of the Church. "a philosophical and theological genius of the first order, dominating, like a pyramid, antiquity and the succeeding ages. Compared with the great philosophers of past centuries and modern times, he is the equal of them all; among theologians he is undeniably the first, and such has been his influence that none of the Fathers, Scholastics, or Reformers has surpassed it." (Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church) http://www.newadvent.org/cathe n/02091a.htm That link is to the Catholic Encyclopedia, and as an atheist I trust it for factual information. Where it discusses dogma, it labels it Dogma. So I suggest you read this link, and you might get an A. |

of Hippo was the most
important figure of his age?

Augustine of Hippo lived in North Africa in the fourth and fifth centuries (in the city of Hippo Regius--hence the name), when that region was part of the Roman Empire. He was one of the key figures in fleshing out major doctrines of Christian belief, and more specifically the Catholic faith. He is considered the most important Doctors of the Church. He wrote voluminously on a whole series of subjects associated with Christianity, and we still possess something sixty major treatises, several hundred letters, and close to 500 sermons that Augustine wrote. Of greatest importance were two works. The first was his autobiography, The Confessions, which was a description of his spiritual life and how he came to become a Christian. The second, The City of God, is an explanation and justification of Christian truth and belief and how that faith functions in the real world. Augustine's writings were not only influential in his own time, but also impacted on medieval thought and was also important in the writings of Martin Luther and the Protestant movement. Hope that helps. Cheers. |
