...The label "Apostolic Fathers" has been applied to them since the 17th century to indicate that they were thought of as being of the generation that had personal contact with the Twelve Apostles. Thus they provide a link between the Apostles who knew Jesus of Nazareth and the later generation of Church Fathers: Christian apologists, defenders of orthodoxy, and developers of doctrine. I think you meant New Testament. The Old Testament was closed in the Council of Jamnia by Jews who had little respect for the Apostolic Fathers. As far as the New Testament. The process of canonization was quite complex. Generally speaking though the books that are in our New Testaments now were received immediately as scripture on par with the Old Testament (which was read in the Greek Translation). Theses books were written within the first generation (more or less) of Christians and contain the authoritative teachings of Christ and the apostles (See 2 Peter 1:16) All of the first Christian writers (Fathers) quoted Paul and the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament as authoritative scripture. They would quote each other only in passing. An obvious disctintion was made early on beween Christian scripture and other good writing from Christians. While there were some loose edges to clean up that didn't get settled officially until the council of Nicea, there have always been specific standards for inclusion in the NT canon that the writings of the Aposolic Fathers (2nd century and onwards) have not met up with. |
