Antisemitism........?
I'm a Jew, have been now for 18 years... And I've been lucky enough not to come across much antisemitism, if any. In fact i wasn't really aware that it is still a concern to my people; until recently that is - when a relative of mine was attacked, purely for being Jewish. My whole family are really shocked by it, as we all live in an area where antisemitism isn't an issue... I was wondering if antisemitism is an issue where you live. And also on the wider scale - is it a big issue in society? And if not, is that because it isn't happening or because people are indifferent to it?
Personally, I have been fascinated by Judaism and the history of the Jewish people since I was a child. It is not talked about much where I live (midwest), but there is an undercurrent of anti-semitism (as well as other forms of racism) here nonetheless. It is ignorance pure and simple. Racism of all kinds is still a pretty big issue. A lot of progress has been made, but in a way, that has driven racism underground. So, it is harder to tell now who is a racist, because they hide it so as not to draw criticism. I have met some people that I would never guess were racists until something vile and offensive came out of their mouths. And these were well-educated people! All we can do is try to educate the ignorant and hope that they don't instill similar misconceptions in their children. I'm very sorry that your relative was targeted. I hope you and your family are OK. Shalom
Why is there so muchantisemitism these days?
I honestly don't understand why so many people have hatred towards Jews? I'm not Jewish, and actually not even religious. I just can't figure out what Jews have done recently that would make so many people hate them. I have numerous examples of antisemitism, so I can't list them all. I believe in equality and I can't rationalize any reasons that someone would hate a Jew.Any ideas?
Firstly, thank you for this kind and thoughtful post :) To correct some frankly mad answers given: There has been no 'genocide' in Gaza. In fact, the Palestinian population has INcreased in the past six decades, which reveals how false it is when some people repeatedly try and make out that a 'genocide' is happening. Israel, like any nation, was legally and morally obliged to **respond** to EIGHT YEARS of Palestinian terrorism. And LESS Palestinians were killed then have been killed by OTHER Palestinians. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------ To the lunatic who gave that long list: clearly that comes from some vile, neo Nazi site, because the organisations on there are NOT 'jewish'. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ---------------------- To the person who deceitfully stated that the Torah and Talmud teach us to 'kill palestinians' - what??? What a load of drivel! For one thing, the Jewish texts STATE that ALL HUMANS ARE EQUALLY G-D'S CHILDREN. Life is SACRED. For another, the very term 'palestinian' always referred to Palestinian Jews and when the Jewish texts were written, as indeed for the next 3500 years, the natives of the region were JEWS. The Palestinian Arabs that we know today didn't even exist until AFTER 1967. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ----------------------- To finally address the actual post...! :) I don't know if there is more anti semitism at present, or just if existing hatred is being more freely expressed. A lot of people use 'criticism of israel' as a smokescreen to express hatred of Jews and the Jewish state. Note: I'm not saying that to criticise Israel = anti semitism. IT IS NOT. But when some people single out the Jewish state and ONLY the JEWISH state for condemnation, while ignoring the far worse atrocities happening in Arab and Muslim nations then that is highly unfair, to say the least... As for anti semitism: there is no one 'cause', but there are contributing factors. You will find that, historically, Jews always suffer when the world or national economy is weak and in trouble. It's because we are an easy scapegoat - indeed, within HOURS of the global markets starting to crash this time round, the blame was being placed on Jews!!! Lunacy! There is a really good piece on anti semitism here, I highly recommend it: http://www.aish.com/seminars/w hythejews/ I'm also in the process of writing a piece on the topic and will post it on my blog, later in the week, so feel most welcome to pop in and check it out :) http://ajewwithaview.wordpress .com Again - many thanks for your kind post :)
What was the caust ofAntisemitism prior to theHolocaust?
What was behind the antisemitism prior to the Holocaust? I understand the idea of leibensraum, and needing the goods they had control of, but what motivated the antisemitism prior to this?
For centuries Jews were considered "Christ killers" by the Christian world which led to much persecution, the Inquisition, pogroms, burning of synagogues, books, Torahs, the Holocaust, the Ku Klux Klan, et al. However, amidst all this turmoil few Christians understood that above all else that Jesus Christ was first and foremost a Jew. Martin Luther railed against the Jews after they rejected Christ and, as a result, he wrote treatise after treatise advocating their destruction. Methods he suggested included burning them alive after locking them in their synagogues, destroying the Torahs, driving them out of their homes, etc. This would provide the impetus for the Holocaust 5 centuries later. It wasn't until 1879 when a German newspaper editor, Wilhem Marr, coined the phrase anti-semitism. That's when the notion of a Jewish race was promulgated throughout Germany and eventually all of Europe. In the past Judaism was considered to be only a religion that under significant pressure, such as the Inquisition, could be changed if needed. I would like to add that many of those who converted to Christianity did so under duress and fear, but continued to practice Judaism in secret, crypto-Jews. On the other hand, when the term anti-semite began to be used the entire picture changed because while in the past one could change their religion, they could not change their ethnicity or race. As a result this left the door open for the Holocaust. Jews were believed to be a pestilent race and as such must be destroyed. If any person or country is overrun by a pest you need to call in the Orkin man. Hitler was the Orkin man. A Jew is a Jew provided their mother is Jewish. No, one does not have to be a practicing or a religious Jew to be a Jew. There are Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Hasisdic, agnostic and atheistic Jews because of the Abrahamic covenant. When one has been born into a Jewish family you are considered to be a Jew whether you practice it or not. It is difficult perhaps for a gentile to understand Judaism unless they take the time to study the religion. My interest was first stimulated to study and familiarize myself with the faith because my parents had Jewish friends and my mother worked at an accounting firm owned by Jews. My knowledge of Judaism stems from extensive studies at the university as a history major with an emphasis on Jewish history. Shalom. gatita_63109
