...Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa west of the Nile Valley. They are discontinuously distributed from the Atlantic to the Siwa oasis, in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger River. Historically they spoke various Berber languages, which together form a branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Today many of them speak Arabic and also French in the Maghreb, due to the French colonization of the Maghreb, and especially Spanish in Morocco. Today most Berber-speaking people live in Morocco and Algeria, becoming generally scarcer eastward through the rest of the Maghreb and beyond. The largest concentration of Berbers (about 85% of them) is found in Morocco. Morocco's Berbers Battle to Keep From Losing Their Culture. San Francisco Chronicle. March 16, 2001. Where can I find information Hello, I would like to know
more about the Amazigh,
especially of the north of
Morocco. Does anybody know
where I could find extensive
insight information?
What would interest me very
much is opinions of Amazigh
themselves, about the mixture
of Arabs and Amazigh, about
the relations, what is
typically Amazigh and what is
not, etc.
Anyone?
Thanks a lot!

Why do arabs want to get rid Today you will hear that
Morocco is an arabic country,
but it is not.70% of its
people speak Tamazight
(Berber) and have Amazigh
customs and traditions. Arabs
are a minority, but they are
supported by the rulers who
are arabsand neglect all what
is Amazigh both economically
and politically.

I am sorry to say this, but i believe this question is one of those question that create more conflicts that trying to find an answer. Arabs, Berbers Jews and many more live in harmony in morocco. No one is trying to get rid of anybody. The Moroccan government is doing a lot to make people feel the same under one flag. In a time one many countries try to get together to form a union, other look forward to breaking there's. Watch Moroccan TV channels and you will see TV programs in Tamazight. I don't care if you don't choose my answer as the best answer but I do know that inside you you know that in some way I am right. My father is Berber my mom is Arab I love them both the same. Peace |
