...An alloy is a partial or complete solid solution of one or more elements in a metallic matrix. Complete solid solution alloys give single solid phase microstructure, while partial solutions give two or more phases that may be homogeneous in distribution depending on thermal (heat treatment) history. Alloys usually have different properties from those of the component elements. Read full entry

Metals are malleable because they're essentially ions surrounded by a 'sea' of electrons, right? These ions are all of the same size, and when, say, the bar of metal is bent they move together and slide over each other and bend just fine. If you have an alloy, you've got a mix of two (or more) different metals merged into this one structure. The ions of different metals are different sizes, and stuffs up the comfortable unifrom sliding we had with a pure metal. This makes it a bit more difficult for them to move and bend, and so makes it harder and stronger. That's the gist of it. Detailed enough? |

How much faster will my car go It's an R reg 73000mile 2.0L
Mondeo Ghia X. It already has
alloys, but I was just
wondering what effect they
have on performance.
Sorry John, I meant
acceleration. My fault for
poor wording.
