Describes the historical background, events, and aftermath of the 1836 attack... More |
...The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a pivotal point in the Texas Revolution. Following a twelve-day siege, Mexican troops under the President of Mexico General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission in San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas). All but two of the Texian defenders were killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, several weeks later, ending the revolution. Read full entry

Major conflicts between the Mexicans and Texans that led to Texas independence began on October 2, 1835 with the battle of Gonzales in which Texas volunteers refused to surrender a cannon to the Mexican army. The Texans routed the Mexicans what became to be known as the "Lexington of the Texas Revolution". The most prominent Texan from this battle was a lawyer named William Harris Warton who, after the battle, distributed pamphlets in a dramatic "call to arms" of all Texans. On October 27, 1835, a small party of 90 Texans led by Jim Bowie routed a Mexican detachment of 400 outside of San Antonio. Inside San Antonio was the main Mexican army of 1400 regulars. The Texans laid siege and on December 5, 1835 entered San Antonio with 300 Texan volunteers. The Mexican army retreated to the Alamo mission where, after 5 days of fighting, General Martin Perfecto De Cos surrendered his remaining army of 1100 officers and men. In March, 1936, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana led his army of 4000 officers and men to San Antonio to lay siege to the Texans still in the Alamo mission. Following several days of minor skirmishes, at dawn on March 6, 1836 Santa Ana's army of 4000 attacked the 183 Texans defending the Alamo. In 90 minutes, every Texan was killed. The only survivor was a widow of one of the defenders named Susannah Dickerson. Santa Ana spared her so that she could carry the news of the slaughter as a warning to other Texans if they fought the Mexicans. On March19, 1836, 400 Texans under the command of Colonel James Fannin were surprized outside of the town of Goliad by 1400 Mexicans commanded by General Jose Urrea. The next day, March 20th, after killing more than 250 Mexicans while losing only 7, Fannin surrendered to Urrea on the promise that they would be treated with honor and paroled back to the U.S. This was the only way that Fanning thought that he could save the 60 wounded men in his command. A week later, on Palm Sunday, March 27th, the Texans were told that they were being paroled to New Orleans and were marched out of Goliad. About 1/2 mile out of town, the Mexican soldiers turned their guns on the Texans in an attempted mass execution. Only about 60 were able to excape the carnage and flee to safety. On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston with an army of about 900 Texans, attacked Santa Ana and his army of approximately 1500 regulars outside the town of Lynchburg in the battle of San Jacinto. The attack began at 4:30 p.m. and, for all intents and purposes, it was over by 4:50 p.m. Santa Ana fled the battle site but was found alone and muddy the next day and was brought before a wounded Sam Houston. Santa Ana surrendered thereby ceding Texas to Texans. His army of 4000 were allowed to return to Mexico while Santa Ana was held as a hostage to prevent further attacks. He was released to go back to Mexico in November. |

How do you make an Alamo-esque Here's the deal: We have a
project in school in line with
the Christmas season where we
have to recreate a piece of
art. My friends and I decided
to try and recreate the Alamo
by Bernard Rosenthal. Only
problem is, we have no idea
how to make one that's decent.
We can only use natural
materials (so that rules out
metal tubes) and it has to
spin with the use of gears and
motors.
Can you guys help? Please, we
need you're help!
