History for Kids - Umayyad http://www.historyforkids.org/ learn/islam/history/umayyads.h tm Abbasid http://www.historyforkids.org/ learn/islam/history/abbasids.h tm One of the differences was based on who would succeed Mohammad when he died as he did not choose a leader to follow him. A blood relative or not....when I taught 7th grade World History, it was explained pletty well in the textbook. The sites above should be quite helpful. They explain that right after the death of Mohammad the Umayyads took over and the caliphs were somehow related to Mohammad, no matter how distantly. There were quite a few in quick succession as there was a fair amount of murder, intrigue, etc. Ultimately, those not believing that the new Caliph must have blood ties to Mohammad triumphed when the Abbasids came to power. This relates to today with regard to the Sunni vs Shiite forms of Islam. |
