360 degree feedback simply means that feedback (and hopefully response to it) runs in all directions. Instead of the boss just evaluating the employees, the employees would also evaluate the boss. Instead of the teacher grading the students the students would also grade the teacher. It's a very good idea and part of policy governance. |

Ever had peer appraisal or 360 I've started a new job in an
office where they heavily rely
on 360 feedback & peer
appraisal on a daily basis.
I'm finding people are
reporting on me about petty
things (which I have no right
of reply about) yet they turn
a blind eye to anyone else
doing the very same thing as
me. I know people here feel
threatened by me because they
found out some of the things
that were on my CV (ie: I used
to be a manager and also some
people think I'm alot
wealthier than they are and
there appear to be jealously
issues). There are some new
roles coming up in the
organisation that people are
wanting to apply for and I
know they feel threatened that
I will get the role instead of
them so I know that's what
alot of this vindictiveness is
about. It's hard as I can't
prove anything and I fear
bringing the whole thing up
with management or HR, in case
it backfires on me and I'm
seen as a "troublemaker" or
something (you know how
companies can twist things
around, especially if they are
scared you'll file a personal
grievance). Anyone else been
through this problem or
witnessed it happening to a
colleague?

As a manager you have dealt with this type situation before I am sure. Management knows what is going on. This is a good test to see if you can take criticism. We all face adversity, whether it be jealousy of our financial status, our spouse, our position within a company. As a manager or supervisor everyone else thinks they can do your job so much better than you. How you deal with these appraisals is what sets you above the others. Management knows what is going on and it is a great tool for judging employees on performance and dealing with coworkers in various difficult situations. As management monitors these appraisals they will not promote someone who nitpicks or falsifies a colleagues work. These employees are only hurting their own chances of being promoted. Go to work, do your job to the best of your ability, put these little things behind you, don't let them effect you. You know the job you do, your boss sees the job you do, and the rest may hurt your feelings at times, but has no real consequence for you. Let it go. You have more important things to concern yourself with. Hope it helps. Good luck with the promotion. |
