Do you know what kind of birdthis is?
Sorry I don't have a picture, but there is a bird on my feeder that has burgundy or ruby colored head and chest. The rest of his body is dark colored (black). Any ideas? It is beautiful. I live in Northwest Florida. The birds we see regularly are black-capped chickadees, cardinals, tufted titmouse, house wrens, and the occasional blue jay. Oh don't forget the SQUIRRELS, but only on the feeders that aren't squirrel proof. I'm ready for the hummingbirds too, but I haven't seen any yet this year. If you could provide a link to a picture so I can compare please that would be appreciated. What a pretty bird! The colors are magnificent on the bird on my feeder!
Its a red breasted magpie. It prefers hot places throughout the year and it thrives in Northern America.

I am having trouble keepingrooks off my wild birdfeeders.?
I have tried caged, squirrel proof etc but they seem to be able to climb up whatever I hang the feeders on and reach over. Any good ideas gratefully accepted!
I use plastic mesh, hanging over, so that small birds can go under and up. It looks a bit untidy, but it works, if done right.
We always feed the birds overthe winter, but now we seem tohave some squirrels?
and they are taking all the food and the birds are getting what is left we put the nuts and seed in squirrel proof feeders but they still manage to get the stuff is there anything that we can do about the squirrels (we don't want them dead)
Hi, I have the same problem - birds and squirrels in my yard and like you I have a bird feeder up. Squirrels are smart little rascals - they can overcome just about anything you put up to keep them out so this is what I did.... I went to Wal-Mart & bought 2 squirrel feeders - one has a spindle that you put an ear of corn on and the other is a feeder that you put squirrel food in (a mix of sunflower seeds, peanuts and corn kernels). I placed them a fair distance from the bird feeder so now all of my squirrels but one have started going to "their" feeders. I enjoy watching all (birds & squirrels) and wouldn't harm any of them for anything & besides that, they all need food. Good luck & hope this helps.
How do I encourage small birdsto my feeder instead ofstarlings?
I put out a variety of bird food, but around here there are lots of starlings and they scare off the smaller birds. I don't mind feeding the starlings but I want to set up a second feeding station specifically for the very few t1ts, finches & sparrows I've seen here. What can I do to keep the starlings off? Will those squirrel proof things with a feeder surrounded by a cage work (they have pretty long beaks and may still be able to reach). Is there any type of food they won't eat?
I have two different types of feeders in my garden - the ones with a little perch on them which you fill with seed and cages for seed cake. The starlings in my garden tend to eat from the seed cake feeders leaving the tats (the joys of censorship!), sparrows and finches to use the perches. If you buy seed cakes in somewhere like Wilkinsons, they cost about £1 each, so I make my own with the cheapest lard I can find, melted and mixed with the same bird seed I put in the other feeders. I am guessing that the starlings prefer the seed cake cages because they are much easier to grip onto than the others.
