How can I squirrel-proof my I have two bird feeders that
suction onto the windows of my
second-floor apartment.
Recently at least one squirrel
has discovered them. I saw one
climbing up the side of the
house (house has wood, not
vinyl siding) to get at the
feeders, and it proceeded to
knock them to the ground! I
didn't think squirrels could
ever get to the feeders. What
can I do??

Well, that IS the question of the century. :D Squirrels are just too clever in finding a way in. I don't think it's possible. My advice is to use foods that squirrels might simply consider unworthy of such Herculean efforts. In my yard, a lot of safflower seed is provided, to the great satisfaction of cardinals, chickadees, titmice, and other species that winter in the area but to less favorable reviews from the local squirrel population. Niger thistle is a food of choice for the local goldfinches and others of their kind, while the squirrels disdain it completely. Suet cakes left out for the nuthatches and woodpeckers are rarely molested by my squirrels, although what the crows do to these is another matter. On the large platform that is especially intended for mourning doves and house finches, a mixture of white millet seed and others is served, which seems to raise little interest from the squirrels in the neighborhood. |

How do I keep squirrels out of This is a wire
"squirrel-proof" feeder. The
squirrels climb out on the
narrow metal pole holding the
feeder up. I don't have a tree
branch for the feeder to hang
directly from. Any advice?
Thanks!!

Keep a dog in your yard Or put a plastic cone on the narrow pole (The kind you put on your dog or cat when it goes to the vet). Make sure the narrow end of the cone is toward the feeder. Or You can get a squirrel trap and trap it using peanut butter or apple cores. Or You can shoot the squirrel with a BB gun. Just make sure you get at least a .22 BB gun to make sure you kill it. Also, in most cases, rifles are more accurate than pistols. |

Okay, serious question. How do I tried chicken wire, metal
poles, hot pepper, fake owls,
pie plates, "squirrel proof"
feeders (HA!), and more.
P.S. A .410 works but you need
to replace the feeders quite
often.

They're going to get in there, but you might as well have some fun with them. Put speakers out there, and find a CD that has a big boom at the beginning of one of the tracks. Play it loud when they're out there. Install some sort of electric fun that you can activate at your will. |

How do you get squirrels away Squirrel-proof feeders are not
an option, and the squirrel
baffles at stores are too big
to fit around the shepherds
hook that they're on. Now I
seldom fill the feeders,
because the next morning they
will just swing it around and
spill it! Are there any
chemicals, scents,
electronics, or other parts or
methods that can get squirrels
away from the bird feeders?

If the feeder is on a pole you can try to to install a metal cone under the feeder and that will keep the squirrels away. They also make a feeder that you can set the perch to close off the food supply off if something heavier than a bird gets on it. Just do a google search for squirrel proof bird feeders and you will find a place to purchase them. |
