Dealing with temporary I have a habit of staying up
late due to bad choices like
drinking caffeine containing
sodas and also by waking up
late in the morning. Should I
just go to bed when I'm tired
and set the alarm early, or
would it be better to stay up
all night and see if I can
reset my circadian clock
again? Just wondering.

temporary insomnia is one of the easiest things to talk about fixing, but pretty difficult to get completely rid of. i have dealt with this problem (due to work/school/nights out/traveling) for a long time and am finally starting to get a grasp on the problem. first, you are going well to recognize the problem, drinking or eating things that keep you up. you know, then, that staying away from these will take some self control, but because you have pointed it out in the problem, i will assume you know how important keeping away from foods and drinks close to bedtime is. no doubt, that staying up all night is a decent way to reset the circadian clock. the only problem is that you could tire your body out too much and be tired for many days following the all-nighter. i do not recommend this method because being tired all day sucks. every day that you stick to a set sleep schedule you will be less tired, but you will likely feel like sleeping any chance you get--and that will kill all momentum a regular sleep schedule will bring. i recommend your first idea. set the alarm to a time when you know that you will get some sleep. force yourself to get up when the alarm goes off. stay busy all day and try not to think about sleep. i do this by cramming my schedule with activities, mostly athletic. any way that you can keep your eyes open and not thinking about being tired will help you win the war. then, when it gets late enough the next night, set your alarm so that you get the amount of sleep you need to feel awake the next day. wake up on time the next day and you should feel like your inner clock is set and ready to get back to a regular schedule. hope this helps, i have spent many years wrestling with the split sleep and insomnia issues and i would not wish that battle on anyone. life is too short to be tired all day! |

When do you have to admit you I took my dogs out to the
creek on Saturday, and I and
they were playing around and I
went in with them and I
stepped on some stones and
they kind of collapesed on me.
My ankle was stuck between
these stones. And it really
hurt. But my Dogs were having
fun. I didn't want to alarm
them, so I just told them it
was time to go. Which they
didn't get because they just
go there. I don't think they
understand and I feel bad. I
broke my ankle. And I feel so
bad. I feel like I messed up
their time at the creek and
fun time. I feel so bad.

The dogs have already forgotten and you should stop worrying about it. They're over it and you should be too. Take care of your ankle and take them back out for fun once you can. |

Are there any on-going medical My wife and I recently lost
our son from still birth.
We've been informed
stillbirths occur in 1 out
every 250 births (not sure if
its US or global), which is
very alarming and I'm sure its
not a commonly know facts, for
obvious reasons. I'm curious
to know if there is any
research to this and other
causes of infant loss such as
SIDS.

I'm sorry for your loss; I'm sure you feel very devistated at this time. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has on-going research in this field. Their statistics state 1 in 200 births in the US. Thier website is: http://www.nichd.nih.gov/women shealth/research/pregbirth/mis carriage_stillbirth.cfm Please also check out this website: http://www.asmallvictory.org/ I think it could be helpful in your greif and healing process. God Bless. |

is there a medical alerter for is there a medical alerter for
senior citizens that alerts me
and not some call center?
For example, a small button
triggers an alarm or a cell
phone call instead of a call
center...thanks

You can program your telephone with an ICE number..in case of emergency number, and put the number of the person who is to be called. You can also buy a phone that has just a few buttons on it, and they can be programmed to alert whoever's number is called. There is also an alert device that a person can wear around their neck, and it will alert whomever they insert into the device. BrickhouseSecurity has a 911 system that calls 911 and not a call center. You might check into that one on their website. Good luck with your choice. |

I nearly always wake with There seems to be no link to
why I wake with puffy eyes it
just happens most of the time.
I don't just get puffy eyes
through lack of sleep or
through being woken by my
alarm rather than waking up
naturally. Could I be
deficient in a certain mineral
or vitamin.
