When remodeling kitchen, how We have a standard 9X10
L-shaped kitchen. It's not
small but it's not conducive
to entertaining as most of our
parties end up being kitchen
parties. We cannot tear down
any interior walls because of
the design of the house and
other connecting rooms. I was
thinking of enlarging the
square footage by adding
outwards.
I understand additions cost a
lot, but what is the ballpark
figure? I am looking to extend
only one wall towards the
backyard. It has 4 windows.
Vinyl siding. I'm in the
Southeast.

it's not really a fair question because the less you expand, the more it will cost per square feet. Just remember that once you decide on the road to do an addition, the cost difference with expanding a wall 36" is not that much less than taking it out by 60". Assuming that you don't run into any site issues, factor in a budget of $160-180/ sf. without cabinets, countertops and finishes. |

remodeling a kitchen?
I am going to get my kitchen
remodeled where do you start?
Does a contractor have to come
first? If so then what any
help would be great. And
Thanks

If you are going to use a contractor, then your first step is to get 3 or 4 of them out there to bid the job. They will take measurements and discuss various options with you, then get back to you with a proposal. Your next step would be choosing a contractor based on those proposals. A good rule of thumb is to go middle of the road. Don't choose the highest guy and don't choose the lowest guy. And make sure the scheduling works for you and that you get a time table in writing, and cost over-runs must be approved by you beforehand. After you choose a contractor, the rest of the steps (permits, demo, etc.) are up to him. You don't have to make all decisions beforehand. The proposal will usually have budgets alloted for various things (cabinets, fixtures, tile, etc.) and you can shop and choose within those budgets while construction is started. |

A lot of it will depend on what type of lighting you want. Are you looking for ambient, mood lighting to guide someone to the sink or fridge at night, or are you looking for functional lighting that will help you see better to cook, etc? If you are looking for ambient lighting, there are a variety of LED "puck" lights (small round lights) that ussually plug into an outlet. These will be the easiest to install and they are fantastic because you'll replace the fixture before you replace the bulb. They come in several colors, white and amber lights being the most common but you can get "colors" like red or blue as well. They can be used above or under your cabinets. They don't get warm, so you don't have to worry about leaving them on for long periods of time (or little fingers getting burned if you have kids) The hardest part is "hiding" the wires. One way to do this is to put an outlet inside a cabinet and drill a hole to put the wires into. If you are looking for functional lighting, you can use puck lighting but use halogen instead. The bulbs don't last the way LED's do but the light is brighter, the down side is they get just as hot as a standard lightbulb. You can also use flourscent strip lighting, these also do not get as hot. These types of lights typically come in plug in but if you look around you can find hardwired ones. I have puck lights under my cabinets near the sink and they work out great! And they aren't that difficult to install. |
