Cruise: Holland America or I'm going on a cruise for my
B-Day in April and there are
two ships Im looking at that
is going to the Bahamas. The
Holland America Westerdam and
the Royal Carribean Majesty of
the Sea. Which ship do you
think is better?
Oh yeah, Im turning 27, still
very young and likes to drink
and party, but I also like the
upscale and elegance stuff...I
have been to cococay, which
royal carribean takes you to
but never been to Half Moon
cay, which HAL takes you to,
so does anyone know how Half
Moon Cay is??

I just came back 2 days ago from a cruise on the Voyager of the Seas. This is the 2nd cruise I have taken on RC and the 6th cruise overall for me. For the 2nd time on RC the ship smelled of sewer in places all over the ship, the crew for the most part was rude and the big one!, I had bed bugs! The food s better to me, on Carnival, and there are more activities on Carnival. Older cruisers on RC and much quieter. |

Holland America Cruise has anyone ever sailed this
cruise line before (their new
Noordam ship). Any info would
be great. Will be taking a 10
day trip to Europe this summer
(Rome, Spain, Monte
Carlo....). Thanks in advance!

Have not done Holland America, but have done the Mediterranian cruise out of Barcelona to Italy (3 stops), Monte Carlo/Nice, Greece (3 stops), and Turkey. You will really enjoy the cruise, BUT, you will probably be tired from the tours because they are pretty long. For example, the port for Rome is about an hour by bus away, so a tour of the Vatican City and Colessiem will take about 10 to 12 hours. In Monte Carlo the lines are long to get up to where the Casinos are and to get to the palace. Same with Turkey, Ephesus is where we went and it was about an hour from the port. Same in Athens. These are tours you will not want to miss, so you will be busy many days with long tours. Advice: when you go to Monte Carlo skip going into the casinos. There is a $10 per person admission fee and the casinos are pase vs what you will see in the US in Vegas or Atlantic City. If you go to Mykonos, Greece, do get off the ship but don't take any tours. not worth a tour but it is a beautiful island, same for Santorini, Greece. Also, we loved the tour of Pompei and also of Pisa. |

I'd like to suggest that you throw Celebrity into that mix. They are rated higher than both Holland America and Princess. Last year my wife and I took the Mercury on the 11-night Mexican Caribbean cruise and it was first-class in all aspects. Celebrity Mercury is rated as one of the top 10 large ships by Conde Nast! Celebrity also took the top three spots in the Best Crew/Best Service category; it won all four Best Food/Best Dining categories; and took the top award for Best Cabins. Yes, Celebrity may be a few dollars more, but remember - there is a big difference between cost and VALUE! My advice is to talk to a good travel agent - one who specializes in cruising, and ask them to provide you a quote for the Mercury. She does 7, 8, 9, 10, & 11-night cruises from San Diego. I'm ure you'll be more than pleased. I hope this information is helpful. Bon Voyage! |

Honeymoon, holland america, Hey, just preparing for our
honeymoon, and was hoping to
get some feedback.
Our plan for our dream
honeymoon is to head out on
april 12 (the day after our
wedding), from salt lake to CA
and take a cruise on the
Holland America Oosterdam, 7
day, mexican riviera. We
managed to find a deal for a
veranda room, which we are
really excited about, for
about 699$ (before taxes,
tips, fuel charge, etc.) and
flights for about 210$ (before
taxes etc.)(don't worry we've
added it all up, taxi too).
One travel agent (younger
lady) expressed the concern
that we wouldn't like holland
america because it had too old
a crowd, and stuffy. Another
(older lady) said we would
love it.
As for us, we aren't huge
party people. We don't drink,
our preferred dance is swing &
ballroom, the library &
culinary arts center's, & the
art are a lot more attractive
to us. We don't mind dressing
nice, and we love older
people. The cruise got dinged
for lack of kids entertainment
& shore excursions, but what
do we care?

My husband and I love Holland America Line, and we're younger working professionals. Oosterdam was actually the first cruise ship we were on together, and it was perfect for us. We loved the Culinary Arts Center, the fine dining, and the generally more refined atmosphere on HAL. Like a lot of people, your travel agent associates "young" with "party" and I think you're right to recognize that that's not always right. I think you'll have a great time. Three resources I'd recommend: - Savvy Guide to Holland America Line, which will give you a bit more information into "what it's like" http://www.cruisesavvy.com/sav vyguide/holland_america_line/r ecommended_for - A Sept 2007 Cruise Report from Oosterdam's sister ship, Noordam, which may give you a sense of the atmosphere onboard. http://www.cruisesavvy.com/jou rnals/pj/2008/zuiderdam_pacifi c_northwest_907 -The "know before you go" guide. It's not specific to HAL, but it has packing suggestions, onboard cell phone information, etc: http://www.cruisesavvy.com/sav vyguide/know_before_you_go |
