What should I put in a flyer I've been doing bookkeeping
work since June 2000. I've
mostly worked for employers in
tax/bookkeeping offices. I've
had a few clients "on the
side" in my home office. I
would like to expand the home
office work. I want to get
people interested in me. With
all of my experience and
education I am a great
bookkeeper, but I cant seem to
market myself. I want to send
out flyers and business cards.
Maybe instead of flyers, I
might send out letters. But
what to put?

Think in terms of your potential customers and what would interest them. In marketing it's not about selling yourself it's about providing a solution to a problem. If you think in terms of how can I solve their problem and what do they need, that will help you write an effective flyer and come up with ways to reach potential clients. The one mistake that many people make when advertising via mail outs is not providing an incentive. Think of a special offer that's reasonable for you to encourage people to try out your services and make that very obvious on the page. Also what would help is to think of a niche market, like doing bookkeeping for home based businesses or whatever you feel has a large enough market to keep you busy but allows you to pinpoint one target market so you become the one to call if your in that target market. Then you can find out who in your area is in that niche market and ask to meet with them or write them a personalized letter, just make it brief and to the point and not so much about you but about them. For example explaining how you can free up their time and save them money so they can spend more time with their children (if they have children) Contact your previous clients and ask for testimonials and referrals. The best source for new clients is through the ones you already have. You may want to add an incentive for them for referring you such as a discount or a referral fee. Good luck :) |

~ If you are in the city limits you need to check into getting a business license ~ Choose a name for your business and make sure no one else is using it and register it ~ Make a list of services you will be offering your clients ~ Do you have an office set up where clients can come and meet with you or will you be picking up work and bringing it home? ~ Place an ad in the newspaper offering your bookkeeping services ~ Send professional looking tri-fold brochures out to businesses advertising for bookkeepers ~ Get a 2nd phone line and have your business listed in the yellow pages ~ Get online with a simple professional looking website - it doesn't have to cost a lot ~ Let everyone know you are doing bookkeeping ~ Target small business owners such as painters, plumbers, etc. ~ Join your local Chamber of Commerce ~ Become a QuickBooks Pro Advisor (www.quickbooks.com) and get a link to your website I don't know the area you are in, but I would charge the rate at which you could get a bookkeeping job times 2.5. For example, if you could get a job working for someone else doing bookeeping and make $10.00 an hour, then multiply that by 2.5 ($25.00 an hour). Keep in mind you will have office supplies to pay for, paper, ink, etc. Not to mention your advertising and gas to and from clients. Plus, you will be self-employed and your tax rate will increase. Good luck! |

That is a very good question...I am in the process of trying to start a bookkeeping business myself and finding clients is the hardest part. Here are a few ideas that may help: Get a business phone line and list your business in the yellow pages under bookkeeping or accounting services. Even if you are working out of a home office you can have a line added. If you community has a paper that is distributed for free be sure to place an ad in it. Usually papers like this are cheaper to advertise in that the regular newspaper. There are many self-employed people that advertise in this type of paper. Become a member of your local Chamber of Commerce. Contact local CPA offices and let them know you are available if their clients need a bookkeeper or if they become busy and need some extra help. Be sure to tell everyone you know that you are doing bookkeeping. Become a Quickbooks Pro Advisor and get listed on their website. You can add to your services by setting up Quickbooks for new businesses. Just because a company uses Quickbooks doesn't mean they wouldn't want you to file their payroll and sales taxes. Get a website. You can offer your services to people outside your area. Send out professional looking tri-fold brochures to people advertising for bookkeepers in the newspaper. Keep business cards on hand to pass out to people you come into contact with. Place a business card on the board at the grocery store. Contact small business owners and ask them who does their bookkeeping. Real estate agents, lawn care businesses, painters, farmers, etc. Good luck! |

The curriculum differs by one or two classes. If I were you, I would get the book keeping one than add the computerized accounting class and the avanzed computerized class. I think you would be very well prepared if you had both. Most accounting today is done via computerized accounting systems. |
