Why do so many Russians look Maybe it's just my naivete as
an American but I suppose I
expected more "exotic" looking
people haha. But on my recent
visit to Pskov and St.
Petersburg on business, it
seemed like every other person
passing me on the street
looked like Aryan supermen
haha (blonde hair, sickly
pale, etc.). Do most Russians
look like this or maybe its
primarily in northern Russia?

Maybe you like lots of Americans who watch too much Hollywood film with NON-RUSSIAN actors playing role of a Russian in film. Your ideas are normal for Westerners, especially Americans. My favorite American stereotype is that we are "Asiatic". I from Russia and have lived in USA also, most Americans have very little to no realistic knowledge of Russia or Russians. I am one of "sickly pale", blonde people you describe. No, of course not all Russians look like this. Russia, like USA has many different ethnic groups that live within its borders and many white Russians have mixed with outside groups over history. Traditionally, Slavs (ethnic Russians) are Indo Europeans with blonde to brown hair, skin tone varies from pale to medium normal complexion. But in places like far Southern Russia and some areas of Siberia, non-Russian Asiatic ethnic groups are somewhat common. But as asked, this type of people you describe are VERY common in the area you indicate (North Western Russia), it is easy to say that they are predominant in all of North Western Russia and we typically cannot be distinguished from a Norwegian, Finn or Swede (which I was mistaken for in Austrian airport once) by outsiders. |
