Is paganism a stupid andinsulting word invented bypresumptuous Christians?
Yep. There was never such thing as pagans. There were followers of the Greek religions, the Roman religions, the Norse religion and the Celtic religion. Nobody has the right or authority to group all those people together and label all of them. From a Muslim point of view, it could be the Christians who are godless. From the Hindu point of view, it could be the Muslims who are religious fools. Get a clue people, ans show some respect for the ancients.
whoa... resentful, are we? haha, relax, I am on your side. I am an atheist, my girlfriend is pagan. Pagan is an umbrella term that refers to any polytheistic religion. It is not the only umbrella term in history: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all called the Abrahamic religions due to their common ancestor in father Abraham. There are a number of reasons for using the term Pagan. For example, In virtually all polytheistic religions, there is considerable overlap between the gods of various cultures. The fusion between Roman and Greeks gods are the most famous, but there is also overlap between Roman and Celtic gods as well. It is thought that the Roman god Mars was a god of the farmers before the influence of the Celts influenced his change into a war god. So because there is an absense of canon among the various polytheistic religions (due to the naturally inviting and tolerating nature of polytheism) using the umbrella term "pagan" is the most practical word to use. Some polytheistic religions do not use that term, and are distinct enough to warrant their own title. Wicca is a popular example, so is Druidism. We draw the distinction between the Abrahamic religions because it does have a distinct canon, and is naturally exclusive to other beliefs (the first commandment of God is that he is God and there are no other Gods before him) so people tend to segregate themselves accordingly. This is a cultural construct; in the future, there may come a time when new religions arise, and Christians, Jews, and Muslims are all refered to as being Abrahamic.
What are the mainphilosophical differencesbetween paganism andChristianity?
I'm not talking about external things, but the reasons that we view things differently? Why do pagans believe that there should be multiple deities? Why is the Earth important? Why do Christians believe that they are so worthless that they have to ask for things in Jesus' name? Why immanence vs transcendence? What do you think?
The single most important difference by far is that Paganism affirms our lives here-and-now and Christianity merely endures it. Pagans say: This life is good and filled with joys and wonders that we should celebrate. Death is not to be feared, it is mererly part of the natural cycle. Christians say: This life is filled with temptation and sin and it only matters in that it is the path to the next "eternal" life. Be a "God-fearing" person because He will judge you upon death.
Why is Paganism sometimesmistaken with Devil worship?
Paganism has nothing at all to do with"the Devil", its a Christian concept. Paganism is about worshipping Mother Earth and nature etc. I have a few books on Wicca and Paganism and nowhere does it mention Devil worship. It upsets me when people make these wrong assumptions. Why do a lot of people think it is acceptable to belittle Paganism and call it "Evil". It is not evil at all and it doesn't harm anyone - have you ever heard of a Pagan extremist??
Pure ignorance my dear, pure ignorance. (voluntary or involuntary) And for the sake of it, I have met a few Pagan extremists in my more than 15 years hanging out with Pagans from all over... I would say there are fewer among our ranks for sure, but to not adknowledge their existence would be ignorance on my own part. They are mostly people who feel persecuted in one way or another for their beliefs, or sometimes people who have recently converted to a Pagan religion and are a bit overzealous. It is upsetting to be labeled as "evil" by someone now and then, but as long as you live in the Light and Truth of your own heart, what anyone else has to say doesn't really matter anyway. People (over time) judge you by the life you live, not the labels you apply to yourself. The best way to educate is, after all, to demonstrate. ;-) Bright Blessings, Mercale
How many Christians denouncePaganism without knowing whatPagans believe?
Shouldn't you learn first what you are denouncing, rather than going off in a rehearsed tirade? Use your own thoughts and knowledge rather than just because the "bible says so"?
probably about 70 - 90 percent, like fireball, hydra and lady kk you notice how most people who denounce christianity actually know what they're talking about. example "who gets your vote for best christian" most of the christians who answered said jesus or mary even though in the bible, it clearly states that they were jewish http://answers.yahoo.com/quest ion/index;_ylt=AmIBQCjCM_FJ0gv q68ff4yrsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090 331170932AA3EkBp&show=7#profil e-info-6TuyXuJRaa
Any pagans able to tell me ofmodern paganism?
I have been religiously confused for a while. It seems that I may have some pagan beliefs, but im unsure of which religion to choose. I prefer European paganism, are there any pagan religions that you know of that seem interesting, and if so, tell me of their beliefs. Preferably Celtic, Germanic, or Norse paganism. the less belief in magick the better. I am looking for more authentic, Reconstructionist beliefs.
Please don't go down this path. It will lead to no good.
