Information on German spelling I am collecting information in
English about German spelling
reform in 1996. But I cannot
find the latest information on
some aspects.
Is the new orthography still
not obligatory in Bavaria and
Nordrhein-Westfalen?
Why were those two states
permitted to instruct schools
in the state that they do not
have to use the new
orthography even if there were
(are) some states that
objected the reform?
Is the new spelling system
obligatory only in education
and the government still now?
Is the new spelling aimed to
be obligatory in any occasions
except personal notes in the
future?

By what time will be display My native language is
Hungarian. I have friends
whoever understand in
Hungarian or Romanian
languages. They are the people
who see my messages as
ABRACADABRA, and encourage me
to abandon orthography. In my
opinion that's not a good
solution. The correct solution
is a perfect switcing over
codepages (by all computers
and all OS's). Thank you.

Nem egészen értem, hogy mi a kérdésed. The internet has come a very long way from the early days, when even a simple é would be displayed as gibberish. These days, as long as you avoid hosszú ö and ü, you should be fine (although sometimes you have to manually change your encoding, which any competent browser should allow you to do). As for when you'll be able to use even the specialized characters with confidence... dunno. I guess it depends on when you can convince every web author everywhere to create standards-compliant pages. In the meantime, encourage better compliance by hitting companies where it hurts, namely their pocketbooks. If an email software renders your emails as gibberish, don't use it, and tell your friends not to use it. Sorry, no instant solutions. |
