How do I transcribe Persianinto the internationalphonetic alphabet?
Is there a website or something that gives a list of the sounds in Persian as they correspond to Persian orthography and the IPA?
Transcription into IPA from any language is the same - the sounds you write down are the sounds you hear, so it almost doesn't matter what the language is (depending on how close a transcription you want to make). Having said that, it does help to have some idea of what is being said, and also we don't always say exactly what "should" be in the word and this is usually mirrored in phonetic transcription. for example: the difference between /p/ and /b/ is only that for one the vocal folds vibrate and for the other they don't. If, in speech, someone said "pack" for "back" it would be transcribed as a "devoiced" /b/ rather than /p/. From your question, it looks like you might be trying to translate from written Persian? This is more difficult depending on the alphabet it is written in and your knowledge of Persian, as some Arabic alphabets do not include the short vowel sounds; they have to be inserted from the reader's knowledge of the language and semantic context. Orthography - important ornot?
Does a lack of proper orthography affect the way you view your fellow Yahoo! Answers brethren? If so, do you feel your view is justified?
As long as the meaning is fully conveyed it's not much of a problem. I'm fully aware that many people here are not native English speakers, some are dyslectics, some are young, and so on. The problems comes when some people don't even try to write correctly, or when the meaning is so blurred that you can't understand what's being said. One problem you maybe forget if you're a native speaker is that a wrongly spelt word is more difficult to check in the dictionary for us non-native speakers, because it might be difficult to find out the correct spelling if you don't even know the word. I noticed many Americans have great difficulties spelling their own language correctly.
What is orthography? Help!!!?
Can someone please dumb down for me what orthography is??? Is it just what language it comes from???? Thanks!
Orthography is simply how a language is written. Whether it be spelled using letters of the Roman alphabet (like English) or Cyrillic (like Russian) or a syllabary (like Japanese) or pictographs (like Chinese). Any form of writing that a language has is its orthography.
Orthography question?
What is the orthography of the English, German and French languages
Orthography is the method of representing the sounds of a language by written or printed symbols - in other words - spelling.
Can anyone recommend a modern, rigorous grammar of theCornish language?
I've downloaded Henry Jenner's 1904 "Handbook of the Cornish Language", which seems very fine, but I would like to find something based on a more accessible orthography, preferably the Common Cornish system (Kernewek Kemmyn), and with a phonological description based on the International Phonetic Alphabet. Please cite author, publisher and (if there is one) International Standard Book Number.
I haven't got any books to recommend, but try and look at this page: http://www.omniglot.com/writin g/cornish.htm Perhaps there's something interesting for you.
