When does a person need a I am planning to submit some
photos to magazines. I took
pictures of my dog, doves at a
park, and birds inside a
building. Do I need model
releases for them? What if I
have photos of fish or
creatures in an aquarium, do I
need a model/property release.
Please someone tell me when I
need a model release?

You'll need a model release if you're going to SELL or PUBLICLY SHOW photos showing RECOGNIZABLE people. Photos intended only for your personal use, and not to be sold or shown to the public in some way, don't need model releases. Model releases are only needed for humans, not for other living creatures or inanimate objects. Publicly showing pictures includes posting pictures to a WWW site, or having them put up in a local library or art studio open to the public, even of the photos aren't for sale. "Recognizable people" generally means enough of the face is shown in the photo so that a complete stranger could recognize the person in real life based just on the picture. For example, if you take a picture of somebody facing away from you looking a background scene does not typically require a model release. Taking a picture of just some body's hands does not need a release, either. ------- The wikipedia and ASMP links below supplies more information, but the information above are the basics that should help you decide. you have to have experience and be with an agency. If you are a bit exotic looking you will have a better chance. Very few models are from America. |
