1) take it to a rock shop & have it cut in half with a diamond saw. A geode should be hollow in the center or at least show signs of crystal growth into a preexisting void. 2) Most geodes are formed from quartz. Check if the rock is composed of quartz. 3) Most geodes that I've found have a knobby external appearance. Once you find one, you rarely misidentify another one. You might look at the outside of some known geodes to see if you see this same texture. |

Pics of geodes: http://images.search.yahoo.com /search/images?&p=geodes&rs=0& fr=slv8-tyc8&fr2= They are common. It's just a small pocket with crystals formed inside. How much it's worth depends on what mineral it's made out of and how big it is. A three inch quartz geode might be a couple of dollars, a three foot amethyst geode might be worth a few hundred. |

What do you use to cut a geode |

While i agree with droptoptommy. there are places that already have pressure splitters that might be willing to cut it for you.. sometimes for free if they arnt busy and its no trouble. Other then that, the circular saw is about the best bet, as it cuts the straightest line and removes the least amount of material from the stone. |
