A friend of mine used to be married to a man who bred Bouviers. They are big dogs who need alot of grooming. They are also definately a handful, some can be very aggressive. One time they got in with the pigs and it looked like a big bloody slaughterhouse. They actually were eating some of the pigs alive. And this is a herding breed! Sorry for the graphic story. I realize there are people that like them. I have been around them and don't like the breed, big nasty dogs who require alot of upkeep and a very firm hand. This would definately NOT be a breed I would recommend, not only for homes with kids/seniors but homes of novice or soft people. |

There are some very good websites for John McCrae, that give his background, and the background for the poem. Imagine his despair at war that was lasting forever, and killing off an entire generation of young men. The day he wrote the poem, he had had to conduct the burial services for a young lieutenant, Alex Helmer, who had been a friend and former student at McGill. Re-read the poem....and notice that the first stanza is very soft and easy...non-militaristic. The second stanza is sad and shows surrender to the hopelessness. The third stanza is one that rallies, almost as if he knew he would not survive the war himself, and urges others to persist. It also contains a threat, that if the Germans were not defeated, all those who died would have died for nothing. We came very close to never seeing this poem, as McCrae crumpled it up and threw it away. It was saved by another officer who retrieved it and sent it to England, where it was published by Punch. By the way, there is a second Flanders Field poem, written on a scrap of paper and kept in a case at the National Cemetery in Belgium now known as Flanders Field. It was written by an unknown American soldier, wounded in WWII in the same sector. |
