Belly dance: what are the How to let students feel
involved in the class? What

class of belly dance? And what
is leting them bored, what is

What the students are looking for in a belly dance class is usually unique to each student. Each has their own reasons for taking classes. Some want to learn just for themselves as a hobby, some want to learn enough to perform at a student level, and some want to learn enough to eventually dance professionally. Students often become bored if the classes are always the same and they aren't being challenged. There are many ways to have the students feel involved in the class. It depends on the level of the students as to how facilitate getting them to feel more involved. Sometimes our instructor will have us stand in a circle and play a piece of music and each student takes a turn in the center for a short time while the other students follow, and when they have danced a bit they choose the next student to go into the center and lead. |

What are some styles of dance I know there are different
types of belly dance...but
what are the types of dance
that are most similar to, but
are NOT belly dance?

Hula is definitely different based on hip movements. Another one that is similar in gyration is salsa. It is a partner dance so it's a bit different, but it will also work your hips in a similar manner. |

Is belly dance really good for I want to lose weight and I
heard that belly dance is
great for weight loss and it
makes you feel femme. Has
anyone actually been seriously
overweight[at least 30 pounds
overweight] and started it and
get great results? Any
recommendations?
By seriously I don't mean like
morbidly obese. I just don't
like hearing from those people
who are 120 pounds and say
they are fat.

It can help with losing weight since anything that gets you moving and keeps you moving will help you burn more calories. If you practice regularly at home, in addition to your classes, you'll get better results. You are more likely to stick with something that you enjoy doing, and it doesn't feel like "exercise". It does help me accept and embrace who I am as a woman. :-) |

What are all the different I've heard of Turkish, Gypsy,
Tribal, Egyptian, and Indian
styles. I really don't know
much about belly dancing but
I'm starting to get in to it.
Are there other styles? Could
someone explain the
differences between them?
What KIND of belly dance would
you say these instruction
DVD's are?
Jillina (Levels 1, 2, & 3)
Jayna (Bellydance for Romance)
Veena & Neena (Discover
Bellydance)
I know the last one is
Egyptian style, but what about
the other two?
Thanks so much for your input!

Jillina does an american version of Turkish Cabaret. I'm not sure about Jayna. Veena and Neena do different styles, I've seen them do Indian and Turkish stuff too. |

I've managed to find some good sites to find Middle Eastern music. Some have audio clips of the music tracks, so you have some idea what the music on the CD's is like, and if it's what you're looking to find. You can check some of these links for CD's. Surprisingly, I have seen more Middle Eastern music available in regular music stores than in the past, when it was virtually non-existant. http://www.maqam.com/ http://www.arabiatower.com/sho p/index.php?cPath=48 http://www.aramusic.com/ http://www.eworldrecords.com/i ndex.html http://www.tulumba.com/ http://www.tulumba.com/store.a sp?tag=r06&t=Turkish+music http://www.hossamramzy.com/ http://www.hossamramzy.com/cds /thumbnails.htm http://www.pyramidimports.com/ index.html http://www.pyramidimports.com/ dvdsandentertainment/dvdsanden tertainment.htm http://www.istanbullife.org/ http://www.istanbullife.org/mu sic/turkey-music.htm http://www.tatikastreasures.co m/index.html http://www.tatikastreasures.co m/web_site/Music/Music.html http://www.orangelotus.com/bel lydancehome.htm http://www.orangelotus.com/THE 411_music.htm I hope this helps you find something new.
