How do I find back issues ofthe Saturday Evening Post, specifically the late 1940's?
I need to find back issues of the Saturday Evening Post from the late 1940's. my Grandfather was featured in one of these issues and I would like to see it and buy it if possible. I have found hundreds of links that show the front cover, but I need to be able to browse through the pages to find the article. Any help would be greatly appreciated....!!
Most university libraries will have copies on microfilm that you should be able to access even as a member of the general public. (Just don't go out of your way to mention you're not a current student.) ;)
What was a popular song in thelate 1940's?
It's my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary next month and i am putting together a photo dvd slideshow of there life together with background music from around the time they were married. What popular songs/music were there in the late 1940's that i could use?
There were so many great songs played that were popular during the war years. I remember singing Bell Bottomed Trousers (coats of navy blue) when I was around a year old, on a train to Boise, Idaho. I had seen some sailors on a train when I was traveling with my parents and grandmother. And burst into song, when I saw them. I must have known that song by heart to bolt it out as I did. And the sailors lifted me up onto a table, and I entertained them with my rendition. Here are some of the most popular songs I was able to find that I still remember from those wonderful years of music. Those below are from the late 40's and played on the radio often. Sentimental Journey Buttons and Bows (Dinah Shore) Doin What Comes Naturally (Dinah Shore) Dance Ballerina Dance (Buddy Clark) Some Enchanted Evening (Ezio Pinza) Cruisin Down The River (on a Sunday afternoon) I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm Dear Hearts & Gentle People (Dinah Shore) I'll Be Seeing You (Tommy Dorsey orchestra) Ac-cent-chuate the Positive I'll Get By (as long as I have you)
If you were a first time homebuyer, would you buy a redonehouse built in 1940?
We are looking for cheap and relatively move in friendly houses. We found a nice home for our family but it was built in 1940. Would you buy it if all the fixtures, flooring, and windows had been updated? We found a nice little house for our family with redone floors, fixtures, and such. If it makes it through insepction do you think 1940 still might be too old? We just cant afford to fix expensive things.
I wouldnt shy away from the house just because of the date built, but I would be sure to look at a few things. First off resale value. You can get a good deal on an older house, but when you go to sell it you may have to give the next people a good deal too. Check the structural integrity. If they redid all the fixtures and interior that is good, but I once bought a house where they just drywalled and painted over the mold. Be sure they did a good job. If you dont know what to look for a home inspection would probably be well worth it. But most likely the house is in fine shape and probably will be just fine and a good deal...
What is a historic "American"event that occurred between1920 and 1940?
I have to write a paper with an extremist thesis. I have to pick an event that is not too cliche that occurred between 1920 and 1940 and criticize or build it in an extreme point of view. It also cannot be too broad, like a whole presidential term. An example would be: The new deal was the most effective presidential enforcement in the history of America. Any events or periods?
