When will the 1940 census I need to do genealogy and I
need to look at the 1940
census for answers.

The "census date" of the 1940 Census was April 1st, 1940. Due to a law passed in 1978, there is a confidentiality period established for US Censuses based on agreements between the Census Bureau and the National Archives. Presently that agreement is a 72 year privacy period. Thus the 1940 census should become public on April 1st, 2012. However, that falls on a Sunday, and the National Archives is closed. So it very well might be April 2nd, 2012 before we get to look at it. The 1940 census is being digitized, and will be put online when it opens. There will be no film. There is a way of finding out information from any closed census for a fee... of $65 presently. It's called an "Age Search" by the Census Bureau but you must meet stringent requirements, and the record must pertain in some way directly to you. You will only get a transcription with the name of your target and the age, and possibly the name of the other members of the family. |

How much is this 1940 10 yuan I have a red 1940 10 yuan

Preserve it. It is the one issued in China when Communists had not seized the power. It may be much valuable. Why don't you ask this question in Taiwan section. Maybe people are busy celebrating new year so ask some days later. They may have more idea about the value of this 10 yuan bill. |

How can I style my hair like I'm trying to experiment with
my hair a little bit. I'm
trying to go for a 1940's
look. Is there some tips you
have or even some websites?

I'm assuming you're a male, correct? Bascially for a male in the 1940's, for you to be stylin', you'd have longer hair on the top of your head, and shorter hair to the sides. Aditionally, you'll want to let your "bangs" or the hair above your forhead be a little bit longer than the rest, if you plan on getting it cut that way (and it doesn't matter if the hair is long enough to get in your eyes, styling it will take care of that). To style it you're going to want to get some pomade (either Murray's or Royal Crown) or you can also use gell or hair glue if your prefer (but pomade is what they used in the 40's). The basic hair style was slicked back, but you could also let the front (bangs) be higher creating a pompador (although this was more popular in the 50's) or part your hair on the side for a "clean cut" look. The amount of pomade you use or don't used will determine how greased your hair looked (they didn't over do it in the 40's, it was just enough). Personally, someone who had superb hair in the 40's was Clark Gable. He had a variety of hair styling that went from slick and classy to cool and casual. Check out some of these photos: http://www.ehistorybuff.com/sk /gable_cinesp%20copywm5.jpg http://www.biography.com/image s/home/320x240/gable_clark_lom bard_320x240.jpg http://www.nndb.com/people/156 /000027075/clark-gable.jpg http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/ DVDReviews22/a%20China%20Seas% 20Clark%20Gable%20Jean%20Harlo w/a%20China%20Seas%20Clark%20G able%20Jean%20Harlow%20PDVD_00 5.jpg Anyways, I hope that helps! |

Can you help me ID a 1940's A man flew into a lake-front
party this weekend in Muskoka,
Ontario. At the party, I
overheard that the plane was
from the 1940's (party resored
... new engine, but I think
the body was original) ...
here's all I know:
- it was shaped like a wasp:
fat cockpit and fat tail, but
a thin section connecting the
two along the lower side
- there were no floats -- the
plane itself floated like a
boat. The doors opened about 2
feet above the waterline. he
took off in about 200 feet
- it was a smallish four
seater
- it was all metal -- gleaming
metal
- the prop was right behind
the cabin
- the landing gear folded up
beside/into the cabin
structure. it was visible but
streamlined with the cabin
area (sorry if I'm using the
wrong words)
I'd love to learn more about
this type of plane! Thanks for
any help.

How do you explain the How do you explain the
willingness of the American
people to endure the hardship
and sacrifice of war in the
1940

that's why they are called the greatest generation. Our current generation has no concept of those sacrifices, but those folks just came out of the recession and had a very solid understanding of hardship and sacrifice. |
