in William Blake's lifetime, were Christians/Catholics
disliked? were they still
persecuted?

Most people in England, Scotland and Wales were Protestant. The majority of churches were CofE, with a strong presence of Presbyterian in Scotland, and a smattering of other denominations. In Wales, CofE had fewer than half the pew spaces in 1800 (Davies, A History of Wales). Catholics were a defintely small minority. The Act of Toleration made it legal to be Catholic (do not remember the year, certainly before 1770), so they were actually treated better than groups like the Quakers. But there was still lots of discrimination. |
