Questions/Answers
I have a bird feeder that no birds come to...no cats at home...dog inside. Why?
filled w/ black sunflower seeds in squirrel proof feeder in shady area
They could be bad or undiscovered. Try purchasing a suet feeder. They're cheap and always attract the birds.
Try relocating it to another spot. We have one too with black sunflower seeds in it and I had to move it around the yard a couple times but now they are coming to it. I also put a bird watering stand by it so they like to go from one to the other...
How long have you had it up? Sometimes it takes awhile for birds to feel safe coming to a feeder.
Try more variety of seeds, though i'd have to say, most bird love sunflower seeds, but the small ones can't eat them. Also, it does take them a while to find your feeder. Best if a tree is close so they feel safer, and if possiable add a running water source, regular bird baths are ok too, but could get mosquito problems, and bird like the running water, they will also hear it! For a while try adding one of those cakes for bird near the feeder. You can make one with sead and peanut butter, the smell will draw them in! Soon you'll have more birds than you imagined! Just watch you car!
Some birds like the wild bird seed mix. My Husband buys sunflower seed and the mixed wild bird seed and mixes them together. We have all kinds of birds coming to the feeder. Also put it where can easily be seen by the birds.
Your answerers have it all right: give it time, perhaps move it to another location and/or put some water nearby. The birds will find it. If it's too close to your windows or doors, where there is plenty of human activity, that might scare them away, too.
Hi, I was wondering how long you've had the feeder filled. They may have not found it yet. If it is under trees, check the branches above the feeder, high in the tree. There could be an owl or Cooper's hawk hanging around. When I have a hawk in my yard, there will not be one single bird around until it leaves. Also, you could try adding a second feeder out in the open more, filled with a variety of seeds, which will attract many different birds. Once they find the other squirrel proof feeder, you can always discontinue the other, if you don't want to attract squirrels.
Don't know what area of (what) country you are in and that could make a difference...............but I'm gonna "bet" that if you got a "bird bath".........(water) for them........... ............THEY WOULD COME!!! Birds are gonna find food --- but they FIND water!!! (good luck)
Perhaps the birds just have not discovered it yet. They like to have trees or some kind of cover or protection nearby. They're also attracted to the sound of water, so if you have a small fountain nearby or some kind of dripping water sound that might help. Black oil sunflower seed is a good choice for birdseed. Lots of different birds like it.
try spilling some seed on the ground or area around your feeder. do this a couple of times and the birds will realize that food is in the area. then stop and they will find the feeder. worked for me!
"...dog inside" THERE'S your problem.
