Where in Southern California My sister needs a cedar tree
to pick fresh cedar berries
from so she can make a tea
that, according to native
tradition, can help with
certain ailments--one of them
being diabetes. Is there
anyone who may have (or know
of someone who has) a cedar
tree, or can send us some
fresh cedar berries by mail
and we'll pay for the postage
+ extra. Let me know please if
you have any leads or if you
can help. thanks!

California has some strict rules governing flora and fauna my suggestion to you is to go to the local natural resources building or state park and ask sometimes they have available what you need |

Your sister needs the latin name of the tree, many different trees go by the common name of "cedar". Once you have the latin name you can look up the tree in tree books from the library or search on the internet to see if it grows in southern California and what it looks like. |

Juniperous monospernum is the type of cedar you seek. It is native to the south west USA, mainly in New Mexico. The berries of this tree have long been used by American natives to treat coughs, fever, rheumatism, diabetes, TB, scurvy, toothache and to promote menstruation. The blue/green berries are harvested in late November. They may be crushed, used whole as a fllavouring or preservative, or steeped in boiling water to make a tea. I have heard that some herbalists etc. are selling the extract in capsule form. These berries are being studied world wide as it is thought they may be benificial to other ailments. Good luck. |
