That was my question too, when I bought my first used car. What I did first was figure out what type of car I wanted, make and model, and then looked to see what was out there. Once I had an idea what I wanted, I called around to several insurance companies, and picked someone to go with. Then I looked around and test drove a few cars, and when I had it narrowed down, I called the car insurance company back, and told them the exact make and model and they gave me a qoute. Then I told the car dealer who I was going with, and (I don't recall if I brought some sort of proof) and then as soon as I had driven the car home I called them with the VIN number and the information on the lienholder and they wrote up a policy for me. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. But just call the car insurance company before going out to buy a car and ask them how they would handle this situation, since I know it's come up before. If I were you, I'd shop around, and not take anything the dealer offers. I use American Family Insurance, and I love them. I have had a few accidents (one totalled my first truck) and they've always been good in helping me. I don't know if they're the cheapest insurance around, just I know that having someone you trust who will give you good service is just as important as getting cheap insurance. |

You can call GIECO insurance. They will approve of your insurance on phone. I did mine through them and no problems. But if you have never owned a car before they might craete hiccups. The othe roption is to find the closest insurance agent and drive safely. |

Get a quote for the type of car you want to make sure you can afford the insurance for that particular car. After that, go to the dealership and buy the car. Then, use their phone to call the insurance company and tell them about the purchase. It will take 15-30 min to complete the process then they will fax you a copy of the policy. Make a copy of it and give the copy to the dealership. Drive off the lot and wait for the policy information to come through the mail. I used progressive because they were the cheapest people at the time. After 6 months of good driving try switching to someone cheaper. |

Visit with or call a local independent insurance agent. Advise them of the type of vehicle that you are wanting to buy. They will fill out the application and give you a "binder" upon review of your driving history and other factors. This will be a quote and a promise of coverage until the actual policy is written. Next, take the name and # of this agent to the dealer and while the paperwork is being completed, the dealer will fax the specific info to the insurance agent and they will complete the sale of the policy. The car dealer does not need you to have an actual policy in your hand, just the binder from the agency is good enough. |
