How do you know you are caught I was just curious because
I've received a couple of
scares from my modem cutting
off thinking they are talking
with my ISP about what I'm
doing with my access to the
internet. Exactly, how do you
know if you are officially
caught by the RIAA? I'm not a
uploader, I was a downloader
before I uninstalled every
P2P, Torrent program when the
last time my modem cutted out
for abit also deleted all my
music just incase.

They show up at your house. Basically they catch you by you downloading something from them, and they in return download something from you. That way they know you are an active downloader/uploader. They record your ISP address, get a warrant and show up at your house and you get served.... But if you delete everything from your computer in the meantime...they can't do squat. :D |

Your modem could be cutting off for a number of reasons. Its not necessarily Your ISP chopping you off (though they have been known to do that from time to time if their servers are heavily laidened with traffic) If you don't have your modem settings set up right for one, you could experience an "intermittent" effect. Or if with torrent clients they can actually flood your ports if you dont have enough open. Even if you delete the files their not actually removed from your computer. their just marked to be overwritten. Once brought in on a scene Computer Forensics uses various methods to tie in a user to a certian action before they even touch your PC. Every time you connect to a server online, your IP address is logged and timestamped as is the file that was requested. Once sufficiant evidence has been found that their is a possibility of criminal activity the LEA (Local Enforcement Agency) issues a warrent to confiscate your digital hardware and medium(They try and do this as soon as possible as every second a computer is on files that are marked for deletion can be overwritten). You can overwrite the slack space(free space) +space marked for overwrite by downloading secure data removal programs like eraser (free). These programs can overwrite any file or slack space several times with random stringsto make the original content virtually unrecoverable. AT best (if done correctly) whatever incriminating evidence they can recover would be fragmented. In the end though, Its a ratio thing, the more you download the more chance you have of being caught. hope this helps. |

Have you won the jackpot on the National Lottery lately. No and your not likely to either. The chances of getting caught and winning are virtually zero. I read quite recently the RIAA have something like 26,000 cases pending. When you look at the millions upon millions of downloaders worldwide you`ll get my drift, so stop worrying about it, If you cant, dont do it. Simple |
