I knew one girl who deeply admired Paris Hilton. That girl was already quite dim, and there was a rumour going around that she went to rehab for a time, so I think she was pretty serious about it. That's what it means to worship Paris Hilton. Girls can worship whoever they want, but they need better choices than the ones they have now. |

It doesn't make me want to throw my hands up, it just makes me want to throw up. I wish the women you named would have a catharsis (apparently going to jail or rehab isn't enough), and will change their ways for their own good. They don't need to be role models. They need to have more self control. |

When the populace starts demanding the media dump Paris and start reporting on glamourous, sexy librarians, scientists, professors and stay at home mums, I guess we'll see a change in teen (or younger) idols. Who knows who the latest Nobel Prize winners are, and whether they are young, hot and look great in a bikini? Despite being a feminist, I don't have too much problem with the Miss Universe competitions. I'd rather they weren't judged by men, but those women would usually make pretty good role models. When I've watched it, they all seem to hold 3 degrees and own their own businesses. True, they look good in evening gowns and bikinis, but there's nothing actually wrong with that. It seems to be a human need to look up to beautiful people. I think bikinis and degrees are ok, bikinis and rehab isn't. |

What exactly is it that would make us mad? If it's because they're sexy, then I believe that feminism is about a woman's choice and women should have the freedom to dress as they please and to take control of their bodies. That means dressing however they want, even if it's something revealing. If it's because they're stupid, then I can't help it if some people are stupid and it's not like they represent all women. I would hope young women would have the common sense not to look up to someone that comes off as so ditzy and attention-seeking. Try looking up to some other celebrity that's a combination of beauty, sexiness and brains. I'm sure they're out there. |

I don't think you have to be a feminist to be horrified at the thought of young girls adoring the three above mentioned actresses/stars. In fact, I had a discussion with my step daughter today (she's almost 19) about Britney Spears. She, my SD, thinks that Britney Spear's problems all stem from her ex Federline and that he got her hooked on drugs. So she was so ready and willing to take the blame OFF of Britney and place it squarely on the shoulders of a man and drugs. Her response really HORRIFIED me, and I set her straight. I said, no, she's made some horrible choices and she's immature, she's to blame for her own choices. |

No. Or perhaps am I not a feminist? I have worked many traditional male jobs in my life, carry big loads for my weaker friends (male or female) and was kicked out of school in the early 70s for wearing blue jeans which boys were allowed to wear but not girls (and was the first female to do so in my school) but personally I kind of like Paris. She may be young and kind of stupid in certain behaviours but all in all she seems to be less lost than I was at her age, so maybe I just wish I had been more like her and had her confidence and familial support. And I wouldn't have wrecked my body so much trying to work and drink like a man. HA! |
