Why do leftists always refer to the National Socialist German Workers Party as the Nazis?
This doesn't make any sense. Why should the nickname of Adolph Hitler's political party be used rather than its proper name?
There were socialist, so they should be called leftists........
Its an abbreviation with stems from the german pronunciation of nationalist
Because that has been, even back in the times, the used name for them. It's from the first word "National...". The "Nati"-part is almost pronounced like "Nazi" in German, and to have to say the whole name "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei" is just crappy long. True, the German language loves its long words, but they are unpractical, which is why the Germans absolutely love abbreviations. (see the song "MFG" by the German band "die Fantastischen Vier", which almost only has abbreviations in its text) But if you can, and don't believe me, than google for Nazi-era newspaper pictures. After they got into power, and even before, "Nazi" was what they were referred to.
