Have a cyst on my left ovary I am 24 years old and have
been on birth control for last
two years and this is my first
cyst. Causes pain during
intercourse and physical exam.
What are the chances I will
need a laparotomy and not a
laparoscop?

Im sure they will always try the Laparoscopy first, and if thats not enough to be able to see and remove the cyst they will go on and do the Laparotomy, or if anything goes wrong (very Rare), like a blood vessel is ruptured or something unforseable. Surgeons prefer the less invasive way first, so the Keyhole laparoscopy is usualy done, then they go from there if neccesary. But considering 6cm, they will have a fair idea of the work and that size can be removed keyhole. |

removing a cyst from the ovary is not done by an invasive technique (laparotomy), usually, unless there is some complications. ovarian cysts are removed by laparoscopy, where the examination can be done with the laparoscope, and then the surgical procedure also done at the same time. |

Mine was 5 cm and the doctor tried the laparoscop first but had to do a laparotomy instead because it was too big. It hurt really bad the next day and I could barely walk. The nurses kept making me walk up and down the hallways and I was hunched over in pain. I stayed off of work for six weeks. When I first came home it hurt to stand up. That lasted about 2 weeks. Good luck. Hopefully they can do the laparoscope on you. |
