Why would anyone think Britney I see all these questions
about feminism and
Britney-what the heck does she
have to do with feminism? Has
she ever been involved in a
feminist group, feminist
cause, or even made a feminist
statement? Since either men or
women can be a feminist, and
strive for gender equality,
why would anyone think Britney
Spears was a feminist?

Since when does being a feminist mean abandoning your children? |

Beats me. She's about as much a feminist as Paris Hilton. I think Britne is just a girl in need of rehab. |

Britney Spears... Feminists... whats the difference? |

Since when does being a feminist mean making near-pornographic music videos when your target market is 10 to 14-year-old girls? The guys who hold up her case as a "victory" against feminism don't really mean it. They're just trying to rile us up. (Sadly, they appear to be succeeding.) |

Poor girl, a product of the Hollywood thowawy brigade. I think she is "so" talented that she keeps coming back, If i knew her i would tell her to play a sport! |

because she was the breadwinner of her family. obviously that doesn't make her a feminist, it makes her a female who happened to benefit from the feminist movement |

It's really sad to see a Disney girl turn out the way she did! I hope she looses her ability to concieve children because she's unfit to be a parent! Why does anyone even give her the time of the day by buying her albums? I know back in 2001 there were a bunch a jealous women who were simply jealous of her looks. I guess now they must be happy over her looks now because she doesn't even look half as good as she did back in 2001. If Britney Spears did care about her kids she wouldn't have been the way she had been. If she even cared about her fans, then she wouldn't continiously be so callous. |

I don't know. But can you *ever* recall a male actor/singer/Hollywood star being railed for what a "bad parent" he is? People don't give a flying s.hit how men treat their kids. (When Alec Baldwin "blew up" at his daughter, many people in fact rushed to his defense. Did they even know the history of the relations between him and his daughter? Did they just think "kids have become disrespectful brats" and shouldn't be so mean to their absent fathers?) Marlon Brando had like 5 kids with 3 different women. I don't hear anyone complaining that Marlon Brando should have "become sterile." French author Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who wrote *books* about how parents should educate their children, had something like 4 kids with 3 or 4 different women and never saw any of them. Parenting is *rarely* the first thing to come up in discussion about male stars or accomplished men in general. Yet it often *is* for women. God please let us see the day when women's identities are not tied up in their uteruses. |

I found that comment to be bizarre. I don't think anyone would think that--but yes, she is a product of feminism. Which leads to my next issue(s). This girl started when she was a kid. She has no concept of real life. She's lived in a vacuum for years. How is she supposed to be "normal?" Also, there are so many other issues around her, same as there were around Madonna. There's class--she's thrown into a trailer park the minute things go wrong; there's race--her audience is young white women; there are marriage/relationship issues: custody, responsibility, the meaning of parenthood. And there's drugs, alcohol, cars, shaved heads. It's like people enjoy watching the mighty fall--watching her go down is almost as good as watching her when (if?) she was good. We're a celebrity-obsessed culture and Britney's the latest target. Oh, and I hear Janet Jackson has gained weight. It never ends. |

Oh stop! Don't pick on the poor girl. She's trying as hard as she can to be a feminist. |

britney spears has always had an income that enabled her to support not only herself but any family she chose to take on. when the boy who took her virginity - justin timberlake - tried to diss her by openly talking about this to reporters (she had dumped him, but was still maintaining that they had never slept together) she not only went public but managed to hurt justin so badly that neither he nor his career ever recovered. while the world and its mother-in-law has been complaining about what a bad parent she is, britney has continued with her drinking and erratic behaviour. this shows that she is her own woman, she is not willing to conform to us female stereotypes just because they are there. britney probably isn't a feminist. she is a free woman. this is something much rarer, and infinitely more respectable. |

Britney Spears is a whore. She is also a feminist in the sense that she a typical American girl. Most American women are sluts. I have found American women to be rude, unhelpful, and terrible marriage partners. All my friends say the same. American women are useless as women and not real feminists. Feminists wanted equality. American women don't want equality. They want to be rude and obnoxious and get away with it. |

There is nothing feminist at all about Britney Spears! Feminism doesn't mean that you exploit yourself sexually for the pleasure of men. In fact, it's about the most un-feminist thing a woman can do. |

People are still misinformed as to what true feminism is or what it entails due to a lack of education on the subject. A common misconception is that a woman who is sexually liberated is automatically a feminist. When Britney Spears and C. Aguillera first came on the scene they sported Madonna tee-shirts and extolled her as a role-model. Madonna was labeled feminists( erroneously) by many because she went out of the way to portray herself as some sexually liberated dominatrix. As Flyinghorse, Tangerine, Franzia, Rebel Yell, and others have tried to point out people try to deduce and surmise what feminism is all about without doing any research. Many have missed the fact that a woman's sexuality is just one part of her life and so therefore some entertainers get mis- labeled feminists just because they do risque dances on stage and write music with suggestive lyrics.
