What is the status of the bishop who is a holocaust denier?
As reported in the media the Pope has lifted an excommunication order against a bishop called Williamson who Denies the holocaust happened. What does this entail?, is it just this man can partake of the ritual rights open too every other practising Roman Catholic. Or that he can officiate as a Bishop?.
He's still unmarried... I guess the pope smoked dope when he lifted his excommunication.
There's a lot of the background to it here from the Catholic Herald, it seems quite complicated: http://www.catholicherald.co.u k/articles/a0000464.shtml
As i understand it he can take a full part again in church matters and yes, is still a Bishop. Goes to show how out of touch our German Pope is! Laughable really isn't it? He was a Hitler youth then he gets this fool to deal with. Wonder if he has explained exactly what happened to all those Jewish people, Gypsies and infirm people who went on train journeys to Poland? Personally, i would make this recalcitrant 'Bishop' go to Auschwitz and see the evidence with his own eyes - stupid man!
Yes, it means he can say Mass again, although I don't believe he ever stopped. It just means those going to his masses are no longer committing sin by attending. And yes, he can officiate as a Bishop. His personal opinion and denial of the Holocaust is ridiculous, but has no bearing on his ability as a priest. One does not have to believe that the Holocaust was a true event in order to be good Catholic, priest or bishop.
There is a lot of "smoke" around this fellow, and quite a bit of "fire". If the Wikipedia account can be trusted, I would certainly not call him my friend. The Catholics should let him go.
He will come back as a lay member as his ordination as a Bishop is not recognised as valid!
It seems he can still function as a Bishop. He should be excommunicated again.
Can he, as a Bishop "excommuicate" catholics that dissagree with his version of events in WW2 ? For example the German catholic families that had mentally, or physically retarded relatives murdered alongside the Jews. Protestant families also had relatives murdered, plus most of the Gypsy travelling families and all opposition factions, that were rounded up and subjected to the same nerve gas. Where did all those skeletons come from ? Why are there so many witnesses ?
I am not a catholic but I am convinced many of that particular faith will horrified if this report proves to be factual. As for the bishop, his denial of the Holocaust is without doubt very serious as a practicing minister of religion. How on earth he could with any sense of logic deny, my view is, that this bishop will have a very hard time to convince his congregation of his own credibility
The lifting of excommunication had absolutely nothing to do with denial. The original excommunication was contingent on the rejection of said member to the changes from Vatican II. The reinstatement is only in respect of the rejection. It is rash and unfair to lay the "rejection" to accountability of the Pope. Pope Benedict has reaffirmed his solidarity and respect for the Jewish brethren
He can now go to Mass and receive the sacraments. He is still not a legitimate bishop and cannot perform any duties of a bishop. I am not sure of his status as a priest and performing his duties as a priest. To the best of my knowledge, these "bishops" were excommunicated for being ordained as bishops without the Pope's permission which is against both Church Tradition and Church Law. It is well within the Pope's rights to reconcile with these men if that is what he wishes. Let's hope that these men will lead the SSPX into rightful Church Tradition. The lifting of the excommunication does make make them legitimate bishops nor does it mean that the Church agrees with their personal opinions. It only means that they can attend Mass and receive the sacraments. Remember the purpose of excommunication is the correction and redemption of the person who has chosen to separate himself or herself from the Church.
