Belly dance: what are the requirements to be a good teacher of belly dance?
How to let students feel involved in the class? What are students looking for in a class of belly dance? And what is leting them bored, what is disappointing them mostly in a teacher?
i have belly dance as long as i can remember. and my teacher always motivated me whenever we had to use the veil.. u know, the oval one... or all the costumes motivated me too.
What the students are looking for in a belly dance class is usually unique to each student. Each has their own reasons for taking classes. Some want to learn just for themselves as a hobby, some want to learn enough to perform at a student level, and some want to learn enough to eventually dance professionally. Students often become bored if the classes are always the same and they aren't being challenged. There are many ways to have the students feel involved in the class. It depends on the level of the students as to how facilitate getting them to feel more involved. Sometimes our instructor will have us stand in a circle and play a piece of music and each student takes a turn in the center for a short time while the other students follow, and when they have danced a bit they choose the next student to go into the center and lead.
Different people are looking for different things in a belly dance class. Some are there for the exercise, some for the art, and I have had one retiree who said she was there to improve her flexibility. Usually what will bore students is too much repetition of the same thing. If you're doing one thing for too much of the class, they may get bored. I usually try to mix things up. I start out with a good warm up, some basic drills, move on to travelling steps, and then work with them on layering, a few combos or improvisation. I have a long class, so after the cool down, I end the class with educational information demonstrated with video clips. What you should have before beginning to teach is a decent Middle Eastern dance education including classes, workshops, and private instruction, a knowledge of the cultural and historical (real history, not wishtory and fantasy origins) information of the dance, a knowledge of basic anatomy and healthy warm up, instruction, and cool down, and patience!
